I came across the post that hairfinity did on Drug-Store conditioners and although I greatly appreciate this site being an outlet for all of us to connect over the struggles of our hair and share information, I had to red flag the post and offer some advice to keep everyone from being exposed to toxic-chemicals in their personal care products.
I've researched ingredients in cosmetics and have spent time visiting sites like
www.safecosmetics.org,
www.naturalnews.com and
www.ewg.org learning more about toxins and how our exposure can lead to various diseases such as cancer and also exposing our children to petrochemicals just by what we put on our body.
Be sure to purchase natural and organic hair care products. There are plenty on the market that are cost-effective. The best part is, because natural cosmetics are so concentrated and don't contain nearly 1/2 as many chemicals as traditional products, a lot goes a long way!
Unfortunately, in the black community, the information I provided above is not readily marketed or promoted to us. But please be aware.
If you are looking for some great products for your hair, go directly to stores and experience centers where staff can educate you on the products. Drug-stores don't have people that can explain what you are body. No service = wasted money when you decide to throw out that bottle of conditioner because it wasn't the right match for your hair.
My faves include, Giovanni Organics, Aveda, Carol's Daughter, Alba Organics and a host of others.
Also, shampoo can be tricky. Sometimes, ingredients in shampoo can dry out your hair. Speak to reps at stores like Origins, Aveda, Carol's Daughter and Whole Food's Whole Body about your needs. Sometimes dry hair is simply due to purchasing the wrong shampoo.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to shoot me an email or message is you want to talk more. I love any responses.
-xoxo Sherrell
